One might dream of freedom’s ringing
while toddlers climb her legs and giggle.
The other wonders what it would be to wake
every day knowing she is necessary.
One sits down to tally food and diapers—the pen
in her hand conjures forgotten plot twists & rhymes.
The other possesses hours and days to compose bodies
of work, hours she wears thin with wanting and without.
I like the idea of eventually coming back to all these poems and giving them the title of some grand work of one of the greats. I wonder what this one would be?
Today’s first draft is partially inspired by the lovely piece words in your eyes, by Carmen Maldonado, featured on the Day 5 prompt of NaPoWriMo.
